Top Tips For Creative Holga Shooting

Comments

Sometimes its easy to get stuck in a certain way of shooting. Maybe you seem to use the same angle for taking photographs all the time, or maybe you constantly adapt the same perspective point.

The first important step is noticing trends in your photography, deciding whether or not you like them and then taking appropriate action.

If you feel you are stuck in a loop then the following tips may help you out.

1. Forget the Viewfinder

Try freshening things up a little by ditching the viewfinder on your Holga camera. If you think about range finder viewfinders, they are awesome because not only do they give you some extra space around the edges of your frame to watch events unfold.

The Holga viewfinder is a little restricting. Try looking over your Hot shoe instead. This way you can see much more around you, and as you take the photo you can see what is being captured.

2. Play With Themes

Playing with themes is a great way to spice up your photography. Take 10mins to brainstorm some ideas. Write them down.

Ok I got cars and windows.

They are two themes that I've not really exploited before. That's two rolls of films to get going with. Next we'll combine the themes and Get Car windows.

Now you could shoot out of your car window, through a car window or even into a car window.

See the potential of combining themes?

3. Look all Around You

Look up, look down, look all around. You miss hundreds of things each day because you rarely move your head up and down.

Try concentrating on looking up and down. (Try not to bump into anyone though!) You'll begin to notice a whole new world of interesting photographic opportunity!

4. Change Your Film

If you have been shooting colour for a while, go black and white. The same applies if you are using black and white a lot too!

Changing around film makes you think differently about photography and obviously gives you much different results.

5. Shoot From The Hip

Another old range finder moto here - shoot from the hip. Just hold your camera at your hip and take a photo. Its a clique but you get some interesting shots. Have a go!
